COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Rocky Mountain Vibes (14-2) tripled up the Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers (10-7) with a 6-3 finish on Saturday night, a series-clinching win, and a dramatic lightning round home run derby victory.
In the regulation game, starter Cregg Scherrer stunned on the way to his team-best third win in as many outings, dealing 6.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 4 BB, & 4 K on 99 pitches. Pitch no. 100 came from reliever Caden Kratz, and it was his only one, ending the seventh inning on a ground out. Left-hander Gabe White sped through a shutout eighth inning. Righty Kerry Wright struggled through one third of the ninth, surrendering a pair of runs on two walks before Trey Morrill came through and finished the ballgame.
The Vibes pitching staff left 13 High Wheelers runners stranded on-base.
At the plate, second baseman Tristin Garcia continued his standout week with his second-consecutive 4 RBI performance. That helped right fielder Alex Adams zoom around the bases to the tune of three runs scored. Catcher Otto Jones followed up his three-double Friday showing with another two-bagger, as well.
The first Pioneer League Home Run Derby succeeded the game. Catcher Austin Chouinard won his first round matchup for the Vibes 7-1 over YUB left fielder River Orsak. A recount in the second first round matchup handed High Wheelers outfielder Leyton Barry an 8-7 win over Rocky Mountain third baseman Dane Tofteland. In the lightning round three-cut swingoff, Barry went homerless, while Chouinard bashed out a pair of long balls for W.
The final contest of the series between Yuba-Sutter and Rocky Mountain kicks off at noon on Sunday, and the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free Vibes trucker hat. RHP Christian Womble gets the start for the visitors while LHP Nick Powers heads out to pitch for RMV for the second time this week.
